Role of the Dermatologist in the Delivery of Dermatologic Care

A dermatologist is a doctor who is specialized in treating disorders of the skin, hair, and nails. Common reasons for patients to seek an opinion from dermatologist in wellington includes; acne, psoriasis, warts, eczema, and fungal infections. Dermatologists treat patients of all ages, from young children to the elderly in wellington. Dermatologists play an important role in treatment of serious skin conditions with major medical issues. In some cases a dermatologist may be required to diagnose issues related to necrotic conditions involving loss of tissue, severe skin ulcerations and other potentially life threatening situations.

 Dermatologists undergo additional specialized training in Florida cities like wellington beyond receiving a medical degree to become experts in skincare, and they must also obtain a license to practice. Some dermatologists choose to further specialize themselves in the field by concentrating their work in pediatric dermatology, dermatopathology or procedural dermatology.

 Various therapies provided by dermatologists include;

Consultations

Patients choose to visit a dermatologist on their own wish or as a result of a referral from their general physician. Dermatologists spend a great deal of time conducting consultations with patients as a first step toward developing diagnoses and treatment plans for their ailments. A consultation may involve taking down patient’s medical history, performing a general physical exam including skin.

Dermatological Screenings

Dermatological screenings as follows;

  • Visible symptoms on skin like cancerous or precancerous moles, melanomas or tumors, eczema patches, other abnormalities.
  • Suspicious lesions.
  • Lymph nodes  for lumps or swelling

Diagnostic tests for Evaluation

In some cases, visible symptoms from patients are not enough to make an accurate diagnosis. For example, a mole that may appear normal in color and size could be hiding pre-cancerous cells beneath the surface. So, to have quality of care and effective treatment dermatologists can conduct series of test by taking skin samples from patient. Various tests which can be performed can be biopsy of skin to detect any presence of cancer cells beneath the layers of skin.

Dermatological Procedures for Treatment

To perform minor surgical procedures related to the skin which includes removing moles, warts, melanomas and other topical abnormalities.

Medication for Treatment

Some skin conditions can be treated by the application of topical medications for treatment of skin condition like eczema, whereas others require internal treatment like oral medication or injections (cortisone injection or antifungal or antibacterial medication for acne treatment)

Providing Patient Education

Dermatologists are experts in their field, part of their job is educating patients in how to manage their conditions and best care for their skin, hair and nails. They may make dietary recommendations to alleviate a patient’s symptoms or answer questions about the overall prognosis for a diagnosis they have made. They may recommend anti-aging or moisturizing products, or teach patients about such matters as the importance of wearing sunscreen to help prevent cancer.

In nutshell, we can say that role of dermatologist is as follows;

  • Diagnoses and treats diseases of human skin: Examines skin to determine nature of disease, taking blood samples and smears from affected areas, and performing other laboratory procedures.
  • Examines specimens under microscope, and makes various chemical and biological analyses and performs other tests to identify disease-causing organisms or pathological conditions.
  • Prescribes and administers medications, and applies superficial radiotherapy and other localized treatments.
  • Treats abscesses, skin injuries, and other skin infections, and surgically excises cutaneous malignancies, cysts, birthmarks, and other growths.
